—Two persons reportedly killed
The member representing Boki/Ikom Federal Constituency in the Green Chamber of the National Assembly, Hon. Victor Abang, has called on the people of Boje and Isobendeghe in Boki Local Government Area (LGA) of Cross River State to shield their sword and embrace peace in the settlement of the dispute between them.
The lawmaker, a gentleman politician known as a promoter of peace and unity, in a statement he personally signed and titled, “Let Peace Reign: A call to Conscience”, said:
“My dear people of Boje and Isobendeghe,
“It is deeply appalling and heartbreaking to learn that the lingering land dispute between our two neighbouring communities has once again erupted into violence.
“I was completely shocked by this painful turn of events, especially given the recent peace meeting convened between the two communities with the involvement of government agencies. That meeting, initiated by the relevant authorities, was meant to calm tensions and lay the groundwork for a modern boundary demarcation process in line with best practices. Yet, to my greatest dismay, we are now confronted with this tragedy.
“This medieval and barbaric approach to conflict resolution has no place in our 21st-century society. It does not reflect who we are as a people. As Bokis, we have internal structures and time-tested traditions for resolving disputes—systems that must be fully utilised and respected.
“Over the years, I have personally been at the forefront of advocating peace and dialogue. Our collective efforts, especially with the involvement of the Office of the Surveyor General, have been showing promising signs of progress. We must not let this momentum be derailed.
“I therefore make this passionate appeal to all warring factions: shed your swords and allow peace to prevail. I also urge everyone to exercise restraint and avoid any actions that may further deepen the conflict or provoke further violence.
“I call on the relevant security agencies to immediately deploy to the affected areas and help restore calm. I also urge the Office of the Surveyor General to expedite boundary demarcation efforts so that we can find a lasting solution to this recurring dispute.
“Once again, I strongly appeal to all young people in the communities: please lay down your arms and let peace reign.
“May God restore peace and understanding among our people.”
Two persons were reportedly killed and three others injured when the two communities engaged in a violent clash yesterday. The communal clash between Boje and Isobendeghe is said to be rooted in their age-long land ownership dispute.
