The Nigerian Senate Committee on Education has held a public hearing on the Bill for the Establishment of the Federal College of Skills Acquisition and Technology, Agulu (SB493), sponsored by Senator Victor Umeh.
According to a Facebook post Umeh’s aide, Charles Ifeanyi Obi, the bill, aimed at advancing technical education and youth empowerment, drew enthusiastic support from key stakeholders and education advocates.
Among the prominent voices was Professor Josephat Ogbuagu, former Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze, who lauded the initiative as a strategic move to close Nigeria’s widening skills gap and stimulate employment creation.
He was quoted as saying: “This bill is timely and necessary,” Ogbuagu stated, “as it will equip young Nigerians with practical skills that meet the demands of today’s economy.”
Dr. Emmanuel Duezeh Jnr., Director of APU Vocational Academy Agulu, strongly endorsed the bill to establish the Federal College of Skills Acquisition and Technology in Agulu, describing it as a vital step toward youth empowerment and job creation.
He highlighted the college’s potential to deliver structured vocational training, foster entrepreneurship, and support national development. He also noted that graduates would earn National Skills Qualifications (NSQ) from NBTE, reducing dependence on foreign artisans. Dr. Duezeh called for swift Senate approval and pledged the Agulu community’s full support to make the college a model of excellence.
The Senate Committee is expected to compile its recommendations and present them to the full Senate for further debate and possible passage into law. If approved, the bill will advance through subsequent legislative stages, bringing the proposed Federal College of Skills Acquisition and Technology in Agulu closer to reality.
