In observance of World AIDS Day on December 1st, the Kogi State Ministry of Health, through its Agency for the Control of AIDS (KOSACA), organized a road show and symposium to mark the occasion in the state.
The symposium, themed “Overcoming Disruptions,” took place at the Banquet Hall of the State Government House in Lokoja, attracting a significant number of Youth Corps members.
Representing the Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza, urged communities to collaborate in raising comprehensive awareness and enhancing the response toward reducing HIV/AIDS prevalence.
He said ensuring access to HIV/AIDS treatment for all and preventing the stigmatization of individuals living with HIV are fundamental to the state’s HIV response.
According to him, communities plays crucial role in bridging the gap between policy and practice, as global efforts to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS are imperative.
The Commissioner for Health noted that “As a Ministry, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting all stakeholders, strengthening our systems, and ensuring that essential HIV services are integrated across all levels of care.
“We will continue to support awareness campaigns, community outreach, and programs that empower our youth, women, and vulnerable groups with accurate information and accessible services. “
Dr. Adeiza emphasized the importance of resilience, innovation, and unity in the ongoing journey, saying overcoming each disruption brings us closer to a future where HIV/AIDS is no longer a public health threat.
He reiterated that the state government is taking deliberate steps to eradicate HIV/AIDS in Kogi State and enhance health sector funding.
The Commissioner called on stakeholders to unite in overcoming HIV/AIDS, highlighting the importance of state-level funding for HIV/AIDS control programs.
He equally encourages all stakeholders to commit to the HIV response by mobilizing local resources. reaffirming the state government dedication to building a healthier society free from HIV/AIDS. And also Advocate for increased health investment through private sector participation.
In his address, the Executive Secretary of KOSACA, Dr. Monday, Adejoh emphasized the critical need to overcome disruptions to ensure comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention and care.
He noted that the agency acknowledges the importance of collaborating with communities and galvanizing their support to achieve uninterrupted VRT distribution.
The Executive Secretary stated that It is imperative to address the longstanding issues of stigma, discrimination, and silence, which have been persistent barriers. Ending AIDS requires creating safe spaces for individuals to seek care, protecting the rights of those living with HIV, and fostering a culture of empathy within our communities.
Additionally, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Steven Momoh Aziz highlighted the need to strengthen health systems to ensure uninterrupted access to HIV testing, anti retroviral therapy, prevention tools, and psychosocial support. Leveraging technology and innovation is crucial to reaching remote and underserved communities.
