The member representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency at the Green Chamber of the National Assembly, Rep. Bassey Akiba, has said that education remains the greatest investment that could be made to guarantee a better future.
According to Rep Akiba as indicated in a statement he issued, the importance of education in the future of a people informed his decision to commit N100m into extending support to students and schools within Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency.
The statement posted on his Facebook page reads:
“I believe education is the strongest investment we can make in our future, which is why I committed ₦100 million to support students across our constituency. This intervention was carefully divided to cover school fees, examinations, and learning materials for primary, secondary, tertiary, and vulnerable students, ensuring that over 3,000 young people benefit in a fair and structured manner. Last year, we supported students with ₦50 million, but seeing the growing needs, I expanded it this year to ₦100 million so that more families and more students can be covered.
“I ensured that accountability guided the entire process. Beneficiaries were identified through verified school records and genuine need assessments, with special priority given to examination classes and indigent students. The disbursement is being carried out in phases to maintain transparency and guarantee that the funds reach the right hands. After this process, the full list of beneficiaries will be published on our website for public verification, because I owe my people that level of openness and accountability.
“This process is still ongoing because I am determined to do it properly and responsibly. My goal is not just to provide support, but to keep our children in school, reduce the burden on families, and build a stronger, more educated future for our constituency.”
Rep Akiba, a former council chairman, one-time member of Cross State House of Assembly and grassroots politician, is acknowledged as one of the federal lawmakers from the state that have made significant impact in the lives of their constituents via quality representation.
He has been widely applauded for his forthrightness, broadmindedness, transparency, accountability and rectitude in the application and utilization of resources accruing to Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency for the benefit of his constituents.
