The Executive Director Conscience for Human Rights and Conflicts Resolution (CHRCR) in Lokoja Kogi State, comrade Idris miliki Abdul, has called on Members of the Kogi State House of Assembly to Always follow due process in carrying out their oversight functions on the Local councils.
Comrade Miliki who stated this in statement , while reacting to the recent suspension Ibaji council Chairman, Hon. Emmanuel Onuche, noted that while the state House of Assembly has the power to make laws and carry oversight functions on the local government, he said such duties must be done within the specified legal frame work.
He wondered if the state House of Assembly can suspend a local government chairman before constituting an investigation committee or a reference to the legislative arm of the council.
Speaking further he asked “What was the offence or offences that a committee put in place can be given one month to submit reports?
If at the end of the committee investigation the chairman is not guilty, what will be his fate
“we wish to call on Kogi State House of Assembly as a law making institution to always follow due process diligently, in its activities and in the current matter under review cannot be an exemption.
On the suspension of the Ibaji LGA chairman, Miliki stressed that due process must be followed, while the process and its outcome must also be made public, in the interest of justice and fairness
