Ajaokuta Steel to create over 500, 000 empowerment opportunities, as Senator Ogembe calls for speedy completion of the project

Experts have said that the Ajaokuta Steel Company could create no fewer than 10,000 direct and over 500,000 indirect jobs if the first phase, is fully operational.

This they said was in addition to to several other down stream Industries that would spring up because of the activities in the company.

Genera Manager, Engineering Services of Ajaokuta Steel Company, Babajide Suru, who stated this in Ajaokuta recently, however said that another $652million would be required to complete the project.

Suru also disclosed that about $6billion has already been sunk into the project, which puts has it at 95 per cent completion.

He disclosed this while speaking with journalists  at the weekend, when they toured the complex in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

I would be recalled that there have been serious opposition from stakeholders to the proposed sale of Ajaokuta Steel Company by the federal government.

The recent was the senator representing Kogi Central senatorial district, Senator Ahmed Ogembe, who posited that the people and Nigeria as a country has a lot to benefit from a functional Ajaokuta Steel complex.

He there urged the president Muhammadu Buhari led administration to make the project a priority, noting that no country can advance technologically without a viable Steel industry.

He listed other benefits derivable from a functional Ajaokuta Steel Company to include, huge revenue earning, technology transfer and self reliance.
