Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has extended his deepest condolence and solidarity to the victims of the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri, Borno state.
The overflow of the primary source of the dam in Borno State, called Alau Dam, is reported to have brought the city of Maiduguri, underwater.
Governor Otu ruminated about the harrowing situation that has befallen the inhabitants of Maiduguri, leaving scores of lives lost, hundreds of thousands displaced and in dire need of assistance.
The Government of Cross River State stands in unity with the affected families and communities.
A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nsa Gill, quoted the Governor as saying, “We understand the pain and trauma that this disaster has caused, and we are committed to providing support in any way we can.
“As a fellow state in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we understand the importance of standing together in times of crisis.
“We appreciate and commend the Federal Government’s swift response to provide first aid; dispatched relief materials to provide immediate assistance to the affected communities.”
Governor Otu urged the government of Borno State to collaborate and work with any relevant body to implement long-term solutions to prevent such disasters from happening in the future.
“We understand the devastating effects of natural disasters and the importance of preparedness and risk reduction measures.
In the spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we call upon all well-meaning citizens and organisations to join hands with the Federal government in supporting the victims of this tragedy. We encourage donations, contributions, and any assistance towards rebuilding the affected communities and restoring hope to the affected individuals.’
“We believe that the people of Borno state are resilient and united, and we do not doubt that you will overcome this challenge. We stand with you in your efforts to restore normalcy and rebuild your homes and livelihoods.”
Governor Otu reiterated his sincere sympathy with the government and people of Borno state, including the Shehu of Borno, Umar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi, whose palace was also taken over by the flood.
His words, “We are confident, that with your determination and the support of the entire nation, you will emerge stronger from this disaster. Together, we can overcome any adversity”.
