The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has described as worrisome the increasing spate of gender related violence in the country.
Dr Tijani Godwin, the National Committee Chairman on Gender violence of the Nigerian Medical Association, (NMA) disclosed this to journalist in Lokoja on Wednesday while reacting on the recent assault on a lady by a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senator from Adamawa State Senator Elisha Abbo
Our correspondent reports that, Senator Abbo is in the eye of the storm for attacking and beating up a woman who tried to prevent him and others with him from assaulting another woman in a sex toy shop in Abuja.
The viral video of the assault sparked outrage with many Nigerians calling for his prosecution.
The NMA national committee chairman while condemning the act also lamented on the increasing rise in the incidence of rapes, incest and assault.
He said the rate of rape and other forms of sexual assault against women is alarming and it must be condemned by all well-meaning citizens of this country.
“Rape and sexual exploitation in churches, academic institutions and home speaks volume of how our society is becoming lawless. I call on all well-meaning citizens to rise to the occasion and do what is necessary to stop this ugly menace in our society.
“NMA condemn the alleged assault by a serving Senator on a nursing mother in an adult toy shop in Abuja as showed in the viral video on social media. NMA joined other well-meaning Nigerians to condemn it and call for thorough investigation by the law enforcement agencies to unravel the reason behind this condemnable act.
“The association commends the IGP and the Senate for setting up a committee to probe the Senator, and await the result of the investigation. We also commend the civil society organizations for always rising to the occasion and speak against gender violence. NMA is ready to partner with NGO to reduce the incidence of Gender related violence in our society” he stated.
