The Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC), has called on well meaning Nigerians and corporate organizations in the country to support the education of prison inmates initiated by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
The Vice Chairman of the Congress in charged of north central , Comrade Alfa Ebune who made the call in Lokoja recently, while addressing newsmen on the laudable effort of NOUN management in eradicating illiteracy among the prison inmates in Nigeria , said education is the best way of reforming inmates before integrating them into the society having served their jailed term.
According to him “This effort of NOUN in educating inmates up to Doctorate Degree level is highly commendable because acquiring western education at that apex level while in prison will enhance the capacity building of the inmates especially in the areas of character and behaviour.
“Prison supposed to be a reformation centre for criminals and the introduction of university education in the prison is a welcome development as it will mould the psyche of the inmates”
While commending the Vice Chancellor of the Open University, Professor Abdalla Uba Ademu and the Registrar of the institution Mr Felix Edoka for taking university education to every nock and crony of the country, the youth leader appealed to corporate organizations in the country to support NOUN and also recognise the certificates issued by the institution.
“This institution has given opportunity to some Nigerians who have lost hope in acquiring university certificates. This is worthy of commendation” he said.
Comrade Ebune urged the prison inmates to take the advantage of the NOUN programme in prisons to better their lives after the jail term.
