One killed  in Kogi as rival groups engages in gun duel   



There was pandamonium  on Sunday in the varsity town, Anyigba in Dekina Local government area of Kogi state when two rival groups engaged themselves in a fierce gun duel, killing one Ismaila Yakubu Agba, suspected to be a youth leader of All progressive party (APC) in the process.  


Although the remote cause behind the exchange of gun fire which led to the death of the youth leader is yet to be established,  it was gathered that  the unidentified trigger happy gun men started shooting around 10am, bringing the town’s  activities to a stand still, as pandemonium took over the varsity town for hours.

It was gathered  that the late youth leader, Agba who is the head of the east district cashew produce of the revenue drive department of Kogi state government and chairman of Anyigba -Lagos loading point in the town  met his ultimerly death during exchange of gun fire at Agwudoko areas of the city.


A source disclosed  that the militant group, suspected to be  from rival leading political parties  in the town stormed the enclave of the other party over a yet to disclosed reasons which turned  out to be  a free for all fight,  leading to many receiving bullet wounds of various degree.

According to some residents of the town, the reason behind the latest exchange of gun fire between the suspected rival Political parties may not be unconnected with the November 2 election where both side are said to be doing rehearsal  in the battle of supremacy that lies ahead.


“We were indoors for hours to avoid incidences  of stray bullets. Though the police command moved in when they  got winds of the incident,  at a point, we don’t even know who was incharge,as the guns continue to boom unabated”, a resident expressed.


However, the Kogi state Police Public Relation officer, (PPRO) Williams Aya confirmed the incident,  saying that only one person(Ismaila Yakubu Agba) died,  and one Alhassan Idoko  received injury from the said attack.

The PPRO however said that  it was not a political attack but a case of a culpable homicide perpetrated by unidentified gunmen which the command is already on their trail.


He said the police authority were drafted to the scene, shortly after the brother of the slain person reported the matter to the police command in the town, adding that normalcy has returned to the vicinity, as police waded in.
