We lost a soldier per excellence, a leader, a great Son of Ajaokuta, a founding Father of kogi State, General Salihu Ibrahim.

General Salihu Ibrahim was an outstanding officer who served the Nigerian Army as Chief of Army Staff. He served the nation with all his heart, with full dedication and commitment to duty.

May Allah forgive your soul and grant you AlJannat Firdaus. May Allah grant your family the fortitude to bear the loss Ameen!

Lt. General Salihu Ibrahim will always be within our hearts and the many others that loved him and as close as a beautiful memory.

He is our hero, a prideful son of Ajaokuta LGA. We love him but God loved most. May God Almighty comfort all of us for this great loss.

With deep sense of sorrow, the news of the death of Lt. General Salihu Ibrahim (rtd) came to us as a great shock! Indeed a great star has fallen from the anals of history and all that remains are his legacies, too many to mention!


Lt. General (retired) Salihu Ibrahim was born in June 25, 1925 in Kaduna, Kaduna State, Nigeria.


He joined the army in 1956. He was given officer’s training at the Nigerian Military Training College. He became a respected Armored Corps officer, considered apolitical although he served as a member of Major-General Muhammadu Buhari’s Supreme Military Council (1984-1985).


He was Chief of Army Staff (Nigeria) from August 1990 until September 1993 during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

He was briefly arrested in August 1985 during the coup in which Ibrahim Babangida took over from Buhari.Later he became a member of Babangida’s Armed Forces Ruling Council.He was appointed Commandant of the Nigeria Defence Academy (1988 – 1990).


In August 1990, General Sani Abacha, then Chief of Army staff (COAS) ceded this job to Ibrahim, while remaining Chairman Joint Chiefs and becoming Minister of Defence.


After retirement he was appointed a Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of council of the University of Ilorin. He became a member of the board of several Companies. As of 2010 he was Chairman of the International Energy Insurance Company.


He was one of the founding fathers in the creation of Kogi State, and Ajaokuta LG. May Allaah forgive him and have mercy on him, widen his grave and grant him blissful rest in grave.

Indeed his loss is a great loss to Ajaokuta LGA, Kogi State and Nigeria and we pray God grants his family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Much ado about the fallen of  the big Iroko. My condolence goes to the nation, Nigeria,the state, kogi. the LG,Ajaokuta and of course,the family of the deceased. It’s indeed, quiet unequivocal about the possessed and cherished footprints of this giant extol. Bearing into his virtues par excellence, I wish, it’s pretty good for the administration of Ajaokuta LG,to declare a free working day and three days mourning prayers for our succoured provider,LT.GEN.SALIHU IBRAHIM. I so solicit. May God provides him pleasant eternal and the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.Amen.
