We must engage our youths positively through Sports – Chief Onoja SAN

The initiator and sponsor of Unyi-Ogugu football tournament in Ofante community,  Olamaboro local government area of Kogi state, Chief Ogu James Onoja (SAN) has called on individuals and corporate organisations to invest in sports development at the grassroots in order to engage youths in meaningful ventures that will profit their lives and the community.
Onoja who gave the charge on Sunday during the second edition of Unyi-Ogugu football tournament at his country home in Ofante village,  said the only way the society can be free of crime and criminality is when the youths are not allowed to wallow in idleness through engagement that will give them sense of belonging and as well improve on their standard of living.
The legal luminary revealed that his effort in sports development in his community  was borne out of his desire to foster unity among the communities that formed Ogugu district, adding that his effort has started yielding positive result.
According to him “I am a beneficiary of community effort and I have a moral obligation to make my own contribution to the community.
“What I am doing here first and foremost is to give back to my community and then also to make the youths in the community to be productive , to foster unity and also to create opportunities that comes from sport especially football which is the  game generally accepted by Nigerians and the world over”
Chief Onoja who lamented that some youths have talent in football,  but lack the opportunity to showcase the talents,  stated that he has a dream to develop sporting activities in Ofante community so that people can come there to also pick the talents that are available in this village.
“It is a fact that most of the people who are from this village have no opportunity to go to the cities to play the game of football, but I have a dream to develop sporting activities in this community so that club owners can come here to pick the talents that are abound in this community”
While calling on individuals to look critically at their community with a view to develop projects that will positively impact in the lives of the downtrodden,  Chief Onoja maintained that such commitments will reduced the influx of community people moving to town in search of jobs.
“If the basic necessities of life are provided in the communities,  the issue of kidnapping , armed robbery, prostitution  will reduce and that is the thing we are trying to do because from the communities one can achieve a lot and earn a living if there is electricity, good road and portable water”
However,  the final match of the tournament was between the Ofante FC where the team defeated Adokpe FC with  5-4 goals on penalty shootout to clinch the 2018 championship of the tournament and went hope with a prize of N100,000 and other gifts , while Adokpe FC also received award for  second position in the sum of N50,000.The third position went to Emagaba FC with an award of N30,000.
